In a victory more than half a decade in the making, John Dahlz out swam, out biked, and outlasted the best collegiate athletes from across the nation to capture top honors last weekend in Lubbock Texas and lead Cal Triathlon to their 2rd consecutive Men's team title narrowly edging out the US Naval Academy by 1 point.  Every position counted as Kenny Rakestraw scorched the bike to round out an excellent race in 5th  while Mike Jafari proved that swimmers can run with a surprise upset in 10th overall and Brandon Basso turned in the anchor leg finishing 5th in the graduate division.

Not to be outdone Cal's women delivered two amazing top 10 performances with Robyn Shaffer and Daniella Mehech running virtually neck-and-neck to secure a  4th place women's team award against a stacked field of athletes.  Great efforts by a senior veteran, Nicole Nakamaru, and a newbie water-polo convert and top female swimmer, Kirsten Auker rounded out the four scoring places of the team.  Just nipping at their heels were Gracy Huntley and Melissa Peabody who also finished top 50 and top 75 respectively.

Also for the men, Louis Vayo swam the fastest split in the race while Jordan Bethke flew on the bike and Kevin Haas had the privilege of watching Brandon race off to greatness on the run while fulfilling his personal goal of beating every girl in the race by at least two seconds.

The race couldn't have been sweeter for Cal Triathlon with every athlete turning in A+ and A++ performances continuing the legacy of a team which has now finished in the top 2 slots at Nationals 6 years running!  Navy was well deserved in their solid overall victory but the Bears look to vie again for a re-match in 2010!

Cal's success continued onto the sprint race where Mike Sontag came first out of the water and was later joined by Ben Hans on their way to top 10 finishes.  Allison Chambers also had the fastest swim of the womens race to finish 2nd along with a personal best 5th place by Samantha Sharp.  Rounding out the sprint race were great efforts by Zach McCutchen, CJ Mishma, Hannah Ng, Jay Bessette, Sam Vroomen, and Chris Fuentes.  Most impressive was that immediately after completing the race, Jay led the sprint team to form the largest and most vocal cheering section on the course.

Cal Triathlon proved again to be the best in the west winning the overall team title at the West Coast Conference championships March 28th in Santa Barbara.  The great race hosted by UCSB challenged athletes with a 1.5k swim into punishing surf and strong current followed by a grueling 40k bike and a speedy 10k run along the Pacific coast.  In the end, Cal emerged on top with Kenny Rakestraw leading the charge winning the race outright with a personal best time of 1:57:37.

Great races turned in by Mike Jafari, Kevin Haas, Brandon Basso, and Jordan Bethke placed the team's 5 scoring men in the top 20 and earned them top honors for the day.  The women were equally strong.  Leading the charge was Daniella Mehech closely followed by Robyn Shaffer, Kirsten Auker, Mellissa Peabody, and Gracy Huntley with all 5 scoring women placing in the top 25.

Competition was extremely fierce this year, but Cal's balance, depth, and speed carried them through to the conference title.    Now we work to build on this victory and carry the momentum into Lubbock Texas as we defend our National title.

Cal Triathlon Wins National Title in Tuscaloosa

2008 National Title Team
2008 National Title Team
Tuscaloosa, Al -- The Cal Triathlon team garnered its first ever national title at the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships here today. The team also grabbed the men’s team title and took third in the women’s team competition.

The 35-member squad was led by Steve Sexton, who won the individual men’s title in 1:52:34, beating out last year’s national champion, University of Florida’s Kevin Collington, by nearly two minutes. Sexton was second to Collington in 2007. Cal’s John Dahlz was 11th while Kenny Rakestraw took 20th for the Bears. The men’s team score of 32—the sum of the top three finishers places—is the second lowest score in the history of the race. It is bested only by the Cal Men’s team of 2006, which also included Dahlz.

Dianne Charleton led the attack for the women, finishing 14th in the women’s field with a breakout performance. She was followed closely by Mary Cate Opila in 18th and Robyn Shaffer in 22nd. Charleton and Opila made their nationals debut today, while Shaffer improved over her 26th place finish last year

“Our athletes really worked hard for this win and I couldn’t be more proud of how they performed on and off the course,” said Head Coach Andy Schmitz. “They were definitely hungry for the team victory and dug deep for some great performances.”

Curtis Dozier, who will leave Berkeley—and the team—this year after 6 years to take a teaching post at Vasser College, turned in a personal best time to be one of the critical top seven finishers on the team that displace athletes from other schools, essentially increasing the team scores of competitors.

“I am really happy to have contributed to this long-awaited victory,” says Dozier, who has been hailed Caesar by long-time team members for his significant contributions to the team’s development.

The team also took home the much coveted sportsmanship award for its major presence at the weekend-long festivities and for cheering with 35 cowbells for all 1,000 athletes across the finish line.

Cal Triathlon had previously won the men’s national title in 2004 and 2006, but has just missed the team overall championship each of the past four years, taking second to different schools each year. The team’s combined score at today’s race—the sum of the finishing places of the first three men and women  across the line—was smaller than the scores of its nearest competitors by nearly half. CU Boulder—national champions in 2004 and 2005—came in second in the combined team competition.

“You didn’t just beat them, you beat the hell out of them,” said USA Triathlon Vice President Tim Yount.

The Collegiate National Championships drew teams from 50 schools and reached capacity within one month of the opening of registration. The collegiate race was followed by US Olympic Team Trials, which featured the best men and women in the nation vying for one of two remaining Olympic berths in triathlon.

“I hope to be doing that race in four years,” says Sexton.
